The balance sheet (also called the statement of financial position) is one of the three core financial statements, presenting a snapshot of a company's assets, liabilities, and shareholders' equity at a specific point in time, with the fundamental accounting equation—Assets = Liabilities + Shareholders' Equity—always holding exactly. As a point-in-time statement (versus the flow-based income statement and cash flow statement), the balance sheet reveals the accumulated financial history of the company: what it owns, what it owes, and the residual claim belonging to equity holders.
