Dynamic analysis of Debt/EBITDA over a business cycle is more informative than any single data point. A company at 4x Debt/EBITDA in a peak earnings year may actually be at 6x+ 'through-the-cycle' leverage when normalized earnings are used. Credit analysts performing leveraged loan and high-yield bond analysis typically test leverage under recession scenarios by stress-testing EBITDA declines of 20–40%, assessing whether the company could remain covenant-compliant and liquid even under adverse conditions.
